We are always been informed that we are the fourth largest economy in the world yet is this now a blatant lie. Brazil and India are probable more important in the economic world. We are now told that the High Speed Two rail link costing an estimated £33 billion has been given the governments approval. Yet there is strong opposition to it from various groups including the Greens, the Friends of the Earth, Protection of Rural England not to mention the conservative members of parliament whose constituencies lie within its path, plus the home owners who say that it will devalue their properties. We are probably the only country in the modern civilised world and especially in Europe that does not have a high speed rail network. France, Germany, Italy, do and Holland and Belgium probable have a better rail network than Britain. In Spain they have nearly 25,000 kilometres of high speed track each one within at least fifty miles of the smallest village, and all this has come about over the past thirty years. In another thirty years we will still be debating High Speed Two, and all this does is push up the cost till the opponents say that it is now uneconomical and this will be due to their objections. In the modern world Britain needs high speed trains, just as we need a third runway at Heathrow, that has now been abandoned. This kind of objection does not happen in other countries, to the extent that it does here. These other countries do what is best for the country not for minority groups Here the Luddites are still flourishing
