We are always been told that we live in a democratic country but is that true? Yesterday 650 MP's decided if gay marriage should be put on the statute book.650 people decided for the population of the country. Is that democracy I don't think so. Not one of the main parties put it in there manifestos. If they had the outcome of the last general election might have turned out differently. 400 voted in favour and 175 against, these people voted with their conviction, but the biggest disappointment is that 63 abstained. If they hadn't got the courage of their convictions either for or against then they shouldn't be in parliament. But an ever sadder part is that parliament spent over six hours debating this when there are far more important things that affect the vast majority of the population. If we live in a democratic country why is it that these members of parliament had a free vote. Did any of these MP's have constituency members who asked them to vote one way or another. If we live in a democracy then the MP's should vote on the way that the majority of their constituents who took the time to ask him or her to vote should have respected their wishes and voted with that majority decision of these constituents no matter how small it was. If this didn't happen then we are not in a democratic country. We are governed by 650 people.
